There is a checklist that is covered before each and every project that is assigned. Students are told about the projects on Discovery Days. On Discovery Days students are shown examples of the style, type, and/or techniques that the project utilizes. Everything for the project is covered during the Discovery. The student is to pay attention and take notes during Discovery Days and complete their sketches for the projects. Sketches are done before the project as a rough draft or blue print for the student's project.
The Checklist is what the student's grade is based on. Usually 10 items are on the checklist that have to be done in order for the student to get a passing grade. Each item is worth a certain amount of points. These items should be done to the best of the student's ability and understanding. Use of a checklist is the best way to grade artwork on a middle school level because the grade is based on following directions and the student's ability of understanding the items on the list. It is unfair to compare student's artwork with other student's artwork because some students are more advanced than others. Therefore, art ability is not accessed.
